Jessica’s Story

For the first time in years, I felt safe. Lying in a hospital bed, I realized this might be my only chance to escape. I had nothing—no ID, no phone, no money—but I was determined to find a way, not only for me but for my baby.

Earlier that day, my abuser attacked me in front of our neighbors. The violence wasn’t new, but this time, someone finally called for help. When I arrived at the hospital, 8 months pregnant, my body was in full crisis. After years of living in fight-or-flight mode, my blood pressure was dangerously high, and the doctors had to perform an emergency C-section to save both me and my baby.

I had no idea what I would do once I was discharged. He had isolated me for so long that I had no friends, no family, and nowhere to go. And I wasn’t planning on having my baby this early, I wasn’t at all prepared. That’s when my nurse brought me a phone to use and gave me the number for Hope & Safety Alliance. At first I felt kind of silly for calling a stranger. But when I called, they listened without judgement. They didn’t just offer advice—they helped me make a plan.

When I was discharged, they were able shelter me for a few days, and provided everything we needed: food, clothing, baby formula, diapers—even a phone and makeup to help me feel like myself again. For the first time in a long time, I felt some hope for the future. I was starting to believe I could do this.

With the support of an advocate, I was able to reconnect with a family member who welcomed us with open arms—a place where my baby and I could finally be safe. It was my chance to start over, to rebuild the life I had almost lost. Choosing freedom that day was the hardest and bravest thing I’ve ever done, and I have never looked back.

I will always be grateful for the people who stood by me when I had no one, who reminded me that I was worthy of safety, hope, and a future.
